I accidentally wrote a five-page minithesis proposal. I’m still thinking about my concept, so it’s mostly a research area / area of exploration at this point. I mention three exhibits in NYC I’m planning to attend this weekend for inspiration, if anyone wants to gallery hop with me. I’m looking at artists who photograph their subversive friends, like Nan Goldin, Ryan McGinley, Warhol types. These photos generally focuses on sex or sexual themes, friends, an art scene, artists as subjects. I’m interested in what makes these successful. What part does community, networking, social connectivity, ((blogging)) have to do with any of it. The scenes, the technologies, the closeness or not of the artist and subject, the promotion and exploitation—those are just some of the topics. I want to draw a line around these people and practices and say “There’s something here,” then chase it down—not to prove that it’s a unified bur, rather, to discover the tensions. I’m following up in a very open, flexible way at this point. Photo from East Village Boys photo blog:
